01 / Start here
Start with the equipment requirement
Write down the specified torque, its unit, the tightening direction, and any preparation or tightening sequence in the equipment instructions. A generic fastener chart, tool advertisement, or nearby fastener is not a substitute. If the application is safety-critical and the instructions or thread condition are uncertain, stop and consult the manufacturer or a qualified professional.
The comparison below is a buying worksheet, not an installation procedure or a recommendation for an M8 repair. We have not tested or calibrated either tool, and the tool specifications do not establish a repaired thread's strength.
02 / Exact models
Two exact models show why the details matter
These are manufacturer examples, not a declared winner. Sources were checked September 28, 2026. Confirm the model and current instructions before buying.
| Check | NEIKO 10573B torque screwdriver | TEKTON TRQ50402 torque wrench |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | Listed as 1/4-inch hex; verify the supplied holder and required bit | 1/4-inch square drive; match the socket or bit accessory |
| Marked range | 10–50 in-lb | 20–200 in-lb |
| Adjustment increment | 5 in-lb | 1 in-lb |
| Torque-measuring direction | Not confirmed from the manufacturer material we obtained | Clockwise and counterclockwise |
| Accuracy statement | Manufacturer advertises ±6%; percentage basis, direction, and calibration conditions not confirmed | Manufacturer advertises within ±3% CW/CCW and calibration over its full listed range; we have not checked an individual tool's certificate |
| Feedback | Manufacturer describes a click as the set level is reached | Mechanical click; follow the manual's stop instruction |
An adjustment increment is the spacing between settings, not an error bound. These differently documented percentage claims do not support a head-to-head accuracy ranking. A missing condition in our evidence means you need confirmation, not that the tool necessarily lacks the capability.
The overlap is 20–50 in-lb, with important limits
The marked ranges above overlap from 20 to 50 in-lb. That is a comparison of catalog ranges only, not an approved torque for any fastener. A target inside that overlap still has to match the tool's permitted setting increments, measuring direction, calibration conditions, and access.
Do not round an equipment specification to a convenient setting or set a tool between marked increments unless its instructions explicitly permit that. TEKTON's shared micrometer manual says its locking collar locks only at specified increments. Its examples cover several models and units; use the TRQ50402 row and in-lb scale for this model.
03 / Working space
Match the interface and working space
A screwdriver format may help you keep a bit aligned in a recessed screw, but the bit profile, shank reach, and room for your hand still need checking. Do not assume that any accessory marked “1/4 inch” fits: hex and square describe different interfaces. Confirm both ends of any adapter.
A wrench format may suit a socket-accessible fastener. Check the head height, room to move the handle, and the grip location in its instructions. A longer handle does not make an unsupported low setting suitable, and an adapter does not solve a loose or poorly seated bit.
If an offset accessory changes the torque geometry, follow the tool maker's correction instructions for that exact arrangement. TEKTON's crowfoot guidance distinguishes effective length from overall tool length and measures the accessory's length change parallel to the handle. Its calculation assumes the head and handle are in line, without a flex head tilted. Do not extend a “90 degrees needs no correction” shortcut to an unverified arrangement. This article does not supply an adapter calculation or an assumed effective length.
For the underlying choices, see our torque-wrench selection guide and drive-size comparison.
04 / Using the tool
Confirm direction and stopping behavior
A reversible ratchet is not, by itself, evidence that torque measurement is supported in both directions. For the TRQ50402, TEKTON explicitly lists both measuring directions. Its manual says to return the setting to the lowest marked value before changing the measuring direction, then set the target again. Do not transfer that model's procedure to a different tool.
We have not obtained NEIKO 10573B's complete model-specific instructions or verified its direction conditions. Before relying on it for your required direction, obtain those instructions or confirmation from NEIKO.
Learn the tool's specified signal and stop at that event. Do not assume every click mechanism behaves the same way or use repeated clicks to prove that a joint is correct. Our click, beam, and digital comparison explains the feedback choices separately.
05 / Before you buy
A buying checklist you can fill in
Copy these fields into your notes for each candidate. Any unresolved requirement is a reason to pause that purchase for this job.
| Record | What must be clear before you choose |
|---|---|
| Equipment and instructions | Exact equipment model, current document, target torque and unit, preparation, sequence, and required direction |
| Tool and settings | Exact tool model; target lies within its documented range and can be set at an allowed increment |
| Direction and accuracy | Evidence for the required measuring direction; applicable accuracy conditions and calibration documentation |
| Bit or socket | Correct fastener profile and size; both accessory interfaces identified; full seating without wobble |
| Access | Head and shank clearance, handle travel, hand position, and room to keep the tool aligned |
| Adapter arrangement | Manufacturer-approved arrangement and any required correction; no guessed effective length |
| Signal and stop condition | Model-specific instructions for feedback; no damaged threads, slipping bit, or unexplained resistance |
Choose the format that meets all of the documented requirements. If neither does, look for a different model or ask for qualified help. Owning a tool in the right general category is not enough.
